L. Frank Baum and The Oz Works

Going through my blog today, and making some last minute tune-ups, I decided that the last element missing in it was the connection between film and literature for this movie. I have decided to show this because this blog is an assignment for the subject of Film & Literature, after all.

As mentioned in an older post, this movie is based on a series of books by L. Frank Baum called “The Oz Works”. Although these aren’t the only pieces of literature written by Baum, they are certainly some of  his most notorious works.

The idea for this movie comes from all of “The Oz Works”  The books separate the different elements of the movie in to individual stories, one book per element. For example, there’s one book called “The Emerald City of Oz”, another one called “Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz”, and so on. The first one, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, was written in 1900, and the last one, “Glinda of Oz”, in 1920. This last one was published after Baum died in May, 1919.

I invite my readers and fellow classmates to find a link between the movies you like and literature. I have learned many times that the book version of a movie is much more complete and allows the readers to expand their imagination.

Along with this small parallel between the movie and the pieces of literature on which the movie was based on, I say my good-byes. I have completed the tasks assigned by my teacher and will be evaluated on my work very soon… Wish me luck! I hope you enjoyed my blog!

Comparison between my classmates’ movies and mine

I believe that not all of the movies are comparable. There are a few similarities, though, between my movie and some of the movies assigned to my classmates.

The first movie I could find, that had something in common with The Wizard of Oz, was Cabaret. Cabaret, just like The Wizard of Oz, is classified as a musical. Although they are about very different subjects, they both use music to reach the audience.

The other movie where I could find something in common is Corpse Bride. Corspse Bride also has some musical aspects in it, although it isn’t 100% musical as The Wizard of Oz. The biggest aspect that both movies have in common is the fact that they were intended as family oriented movies. I do believe, though, that The Wizard of Oz is a little more famous due to the fact that it’s from 1939, opposed to Corpse Bride that’s only 2 years old.

Regarding the rest of my classmates’ movies, I don’t really see many similarities.

The Wicked Witch of the West

Wicked Witch of the WestWWW

An emblematic character of the movie, The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton)is terribly scarry, and I do believe that most little children cheer when she melts in the film.

Over the rainbow lyrics

Over the Rainbow (Judy Garland)

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.

Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.

Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly,
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then, oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow,
Why oh why can’t I?

Old time favourite…..

Getting in to the personal side, I must say…. The Wizard of Oz is an old time favourite….. I can’t actually remember the first time I saw it, I must have been really little.

I can say, for sure, that I know all the songs and some of the dialogues, even.

If someone would ask me who’s my favourtie character, I would defenitely have to say the Cowardly Lion….Isn’t he just adorable??!?!?!?!?  hahahah

Well, if you happen to come by, tell me, did you like the movie? Have you actaully seen it? Do you have a favourite character????

Greetings to all,

Josie
